A richly woven brocade skirt from Gianfranco Ferré’s Autumn/Winter 1988 collection. Cut in straight pencil silhouette, it features an intricate botanical motif in antique gold, burgundy and black, finished with brown satin binding at the hem.

The same distinctive brocade appeared as trousers on the Autumn/Winter 1988 runway. Translating the collection’s opulence into a remarkably wearable form, the skirt reflects Ferré’s characteristically architectural approach to proportion and his assured balance of structure and decorative richness.

Ferré’s evening fabrics are often at their most compelling when placed within a disciplined silhouette. Here, the restrained pencil cut allows the extraordinary brocade to take precedence: decorative and opulent, yet remarkably refined.
