1989 Caroline Charles Documented Velvet Evening Jacket

Caroline Charles jacket photographed on Claudia Schiffer for British Vogue, December 1989. Black velvet is densely worked with tonal floral embroidery over a sharply sculpted silhouette, creating a piece that feels both opulent and remarkably modern.

A striking example of Caroline Charles’ late-1980s eveningwear, the jacket is cut close through the body with a deep curved neckline, defined waist and softly flared, rounded hem. The black cotton velvet is covered almost entirely in elaborate floral embroidery, worked tonally in black and charcoal so that the pattern emerges differently as it catches the light. A closely spaced row of buttons follows the centre front, while fine twisted cord outlines the neckline, front opening, hem and cuffs.
