Bruce Oldfield Black Silk Velvet Draped Dress, 1980s

Curator’s Note

A black silk-blend velvet dress by Bruce Oldfield, ca late 1980s/early 90s. Cut with short sleeves and a clean, elongated silhouette, the simplicity of the upper body gives way to intricate gathering through the hips, drawn into a deeply pleated panel at the centre front.

The dress is finished with black satin binding around the neckline and down the front, punctuated by faceted square buttons that catch the light against the depth of the velvet. The concentrated draping gives the otherwise restrained silhouette a subtle sense of drama.

Made in England, it is a particularly elegant example of Oldfield’s eveningwear from the period - understated at first glance, but highly considered in its construction.
